The Department of Culture Media and Sport recently commisioned Sport England's Active People Survey.
The survey produced 'National Indicators' of participation of English adults in cultural activity.
These included measuring the percentage of adults that stated that they had attended 3 or more arts activities in the last 12 months (NI 11), the percentage of adults that stated that they had attended a museum or gallery in the last 12 months (NI 10) and the percentage of adults that stated that they had used a public library service in the last 12 months (NI 9).
Although the results differ across each cultural form, there are similarities with each map. There is a persistent patch of low participation in Birmingham and The Black Country (to the centre-East of the region) and in the Stoke-on-Trent / Staffordshire Moorlands area (to the far North East). Participation in culture is consistently high to the South – South East area of the region from the Malvern Hills in the South, to the Warwick / Rugby area in the South East corner. Stafford also forms an ‘island’ of high participation towards the North of the region, despite bordering several areas of low participation. Overall, the maps serves as a useful reminder that in statistics, the ‘West Midlands average’ can mask what is often an array of high and low results.
