Imaginative Portraits

Exhibitors include RBSA members Emily Porter Salmon and Simon Davis, who are both highly acclaimed portrait artists. Simon Davis is also a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and has won second prize in this year’s BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait gallery. Emily Porter Salmon has exhibited in many national portrait exhibitions and has established a reputation for prominent portrait commissions.

Invited artists in this exhibition include the winner of the RBSA ‘Prize’ exhibition David Lawton, for his portrait of ‘Stephen’. This portrait also won second prize in last year’s BP portrait award, we wait in anticipation to see what David will exhibit in this portrait exhibition. Andrew James, Vice President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters will also exhibit a specially chosen portrait.

From the numerous entries for this award, the curators have chosen exciting work by local and national portrait artists. The selection includes, Maria Caisley whose entry is an abstract with a ‘cubist’ arrangement of features in blocks of colour, which come together to create a unique portrait of ‘Noel’. A portrait of ‘Celia’ by Pamela Crewe is reminiscent of the ‘Fauves’ in her use of vibrant colour, Pamela states her painting is more of “a loose impressionist style in order to capture essential characteristics, colour and liveliness’. Distorted portraits by Bren Head reveal there is more to a portrait than resemblance, in texturing and applying layers of paint, Bren states “the subject is buried, submerged, caught in a trap, while tender emotions, memories and observations can be exposed by layers peeled away”. These entries are examples of just a few of the impressive works on display.

Throughout the exhibition there will be demonstrations by exhibiting artists and if you are a budding artist you can develop your own skills in one of our specialist workshops. There are also special family events during the summer holidays with the very popular portrait artist Emily Porter Salmon. For further information see our website www.rbsa.org.uk

Applications are welcome for commissions of portraits from any of the exhibiting artists; please note prices are on application.

The RBSA (Royal Birmingham Society of Artists) is an independent institution led by artists; the gallery has a changing programme of exhibitions on two floors of gallery space that includes four ‘Open’ exhibitions where artists can submit work for selection. The ground floor has space for solo shows as well as a Craft Gallery which has established a reputation as the place to find exciting and unique jewellery, ceramics and glass.
