Arts Council England has made a seventh round of awards from its £40 million Sustain fund for organisations under pressure as a result of the recession.
All awards from the Sustain fund are one-off and are made to cover the period 2009 – 2011. The seventh round of awards are worth just under £8 million over two years and will help 27 arts organisations maintain artistic excellence during the economic downturn.
A total of 194 applications were received with two West Midlands organisations - Birmingham-based CBSO and Warwick Arts Centre, in Coventry - benefitting.
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s application met the Sustain criteria as the Orchestra has been adversely impacted by the recession. As such, ACE have offered a Sustain award of £388,000 to maintain the quality of artistic output and resolve immediate cash flow problems caused by loss of development income and touring income.
Elements of Warwick Arts Centre’s application have been judged to meet the Sustain criteria resulting in a Sustain award of £215,000 to help the organisation with the adverse impact of the recession by maintaining the quality of artistic output and resolve immediate cash flow problems caused by loss of income from box office, trusts and foundations.
Other recipients include Brighton Dome and Festival, Derby Quad, Leicester Threatre Trust, The Roundhouse, Nottingham Contemporary Ltd, Royal Court Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Whitechapel Gallery.
